The best de-icer for safer driving this winter

An icy windscreen can seriously impair vision when driving, de-icer will keep it clear quickly.

Ice, nice in a glass of lemonade on a hot summer's day, not very nice when it's stuck to your windscreen on a miserable morning in January. And while you can get to work with a decent ice scraper or chance throwing boiling water onto the ice (don't, you'll do damage), de-icer is far quicker and less strenuous. Take a look below at our favourite de-icers right here.

The best de-icer for your car

Swedish Ice Scraper

We want to point out that it's far cheaper for you and better for the planet if you use an ice scraper instead of de-icer. The Swedish Ice Scraper is our pick. Made from laser cut 6mm recycled acrylic glass, it's both strong and amazingly effective. Each side is useable to remove ice because each is diamond polished. We like the little neoprene sleeve too, oh and there is a slot along one side for clearing windscreen wipers.

What you need to know about de-icer

Can I prevent my windscreen from freezing over in the first place?

There are a few steps you can take to ensure your windscreen doesn't freeze over which will mean no need to get out the de-icer and ice scraper:

  • Park your car in a garage overnight. While this isn't foolproof, it should reduce the chances of your windscreen freezing.

  • Invest in a good car cover.

  • A pre-icer can be used to prevent ice from forming on your windscreen in the first place.

Is de-icer harmful?

There's no other way of saying it but de-icer is a potentially dangerous product for both you and the planet. The chemicals that make it up are often poisonous to humans, wildlife and greenery which means you need to be careful about spillages and ensure you aren't too liberal in its application.

Add in that the fumes from de-icer aerosol can cause dizziness and nausea it's clear that you need to be careful when applying de-icer. A small saving grace is that the used aerosol containers are often recyclable.
